Nowadays, startups are everywhere and more are being created every day. What was once a weird word has now become something even our parents have heard about. Even so, startups still tend to be seen as unstable and uncertain, so when I quit my previous job many of my friends were surprised by my decision.
When I told my parents, my family and my ex-colleagues I was going to work at a startup most of them asked me why I was leaving a safe job where I could spend the rest of my life for another where I would be taking a big risk and joining a young team. My answer was: I want to help build something meaningful and be heard.
I’m 27 years old and the thought of working at a big company all my life freaks me out. Maybe it’s because I’m a Millennial but I want to help build and grow a company. I want my thoughts to be taken into consideration, allow myself to fail and start the process all over again. Once I knew I wanted the experience of working at a startup, I chose one that really means something to me and that I believe in.
Working at advertio allows me to be a decision maker while also being a team player. At the same time, I’m proud of what we’re building because I feel it can positively affect the businesses that work with us and make their lives a little easier. Since my first day here I have been given a lot of freedom by the management team as to what I want to do and even my schedule, but I’ve turned that freedom into the responsibility to do the best I can for this product. And so has the entire team.
Over the last month, I have got to know a truly welcoming team with different backgrounds, nationalities and personalities who share the exact same goal. Despite our differences, we are committed to this product that we all feel is ours and although we use the latest technology, we are still just a group of crazy people who want to make a difference in the advertising market and we will do it together.
As one of the latest additions to the team, I started asking my colleagues why they chose advertio and why they are still here. The answers did not surprise me but rather comforted me, as I saw others who think like me.
I chose advertio rather than a big company mainly because of product ownership. Here I feel the product is ours and that pushes me to do more: to believe in us. If I was working at a consulting company for example, I would just be one more person working on a project I knew little about.
I feel that we are building something that can have an impact on society and fulfil a purpose. We are helping small advertisers improve their businesses and that makes me proud.
Lastly, I would say that the lack of bureaucracy and strict processes — which usually prevent you from contributing — also plays a role because it makes me more creative. I feel comfortable sharing my ideas or suggesting changes to everyone even if they are not in the same department as me.
As someone who loves creating things, I was lucky to have had the chance to join advertio in July 2017, back when we were just getting started.
It gave me the unique opportunity of taking part in the brainstorming and decision-making process that would shape the app’s development and seeing what started as a cool idea grow into a living, working product.
Now I get to work with a great team of like-minded people, helping drive it even further to become the awesome app we envision.
I came to advertio because I really liked the project and I wanted my first job to be related with startups because that’s what I always saw myself doing. I studied business management and I always had a particular interest in entrepreneurship and marketing rather than accounting, for example.
I started at advertio as content strategist but kept a close eye on product, giving feedback and suggestions for improvements and stepping in to help where needed, including in human resources. At a startup it is normal to wear a lot of different hats but when we started growing the team we found people to focus 100% on different roles such as content, growth and customer success, allowing me to concentrate on product and project management, which was what I really wanted to do.
Why am I still here? Because I truly believe in our idea and that we can change the digital advertising market profoundly. Also, I really like our team and how we all get along great.
Software engineering is a very broad field, like many others. Working at a startup enabled me to explore different subjects, which is great when starting out, because it doesn’t require me to focus too much on a specific technology or practice.
At advertio I’m able to see the complete product — from an initial idea, to its design and development — which is not only very interesting to witness but also allows me to understand how a company works and grows.
Also, big companies don’t usually allow someone starting a career like me, to have that much impact on the product, but here it’s easy to talk to everyone, share my thoughts and feel like my opinion actually matters and can make a difference.
